Systems
Much of Lee Walton’s work utilizes systems. Some of these systems are a lists of commands and predetermined responses to public situations. Some involve a set of linear, painterly or musical responses to how players perform in a game or match, for example, a baseball game or chess match. Although the formulation of a system is an important part of the artist’s process, these documents are usually not displayed. Rather it is the end result, a performance, drawing, painting or print, that is seen. This collection provides an opportunity to take a closer look at this integral element of Walton’s work.
In selecting these 100 systems, I was invested in the content of each piece. This collection shows the breadth of different types of approaches Lee has taken. Systems that involve commands for performance and behavior create opportunities for interaction with the environment and with other people. Some of these are goal or mission oriented such as #9. Some are more experimental and focus on experience rather than an end result such as #1. Systems that relate with sports and games often chronicle the movement of the players in the form of charts. These can translate into paintings, drawings, prints and even music via preset codes. Examples of this are #23 and #27. I have also included some imagery and work that relates with and provides context for the systems. #32 and #100 are included within this selection.
I hope you enjoy this collection of Lee Walton’s systems.
