Journey to the UNCG Library
This walk will take you to the UNCG Library and back to the Gatewood Building. Look around as you walk. What do you notice outside - are there parts of the campus you haven’t looked at before? What is the flora like? and what about the animals? Do you hear the sound of birds? Do you hear the sound of the wind? Or is it mainly traffic?
-
Leave the Gatewood Building
-
Turn right towards Spring Garden
-
On Spring Garden Street, turn left
-
Turn right at the stone monoliths, before the clock-tower, which should be on your left
-
Turn left towards the Elliott University Center - notice the blossoming trees (magnolias?)
-
Inside the EUC, go up the stairs and go around to the Information desk. Across is a sculpture by Jane South of a folded-up figure. Notice that the figure seems to be touching the glass container it’s in. Was this the artist’s intention?
-
If you’re facing the figure, go to the right, and the second passage on the right leads to the library. Take this passage (follow the signs to the library)
-
On the way, you’ll notice a wooden sculpture
-
Once you enter the library, there’s a painting to the left
-
In the middle of the lobby, look up at the hanging installation
-
Turning right: go right towards the entrance. In the next lobby, you’ll notice a large wooden head
-
There is some seating here. Take a seat, write or sketch about your experience on this walk
-
On the way back, when you’re at the campus map, follow the path that cuts diagonally through the garden. There is a faded placard with identifiers for all the trees in Foust Park. Here, notice the names of the previous graduates on the bricks below.
-
Return to the Gatewood building. Pinup your sketch/notes on the wall (if you would like to do that)
