The Powerplant Gallery, Toronto CA
For the exhibition "Not Quite How I Remember It", Lee Walton worked with over 40 actors to orchestrate a series of 30-minute Life/Theater performances at the Harbourfront.
Mixing real life and theater, participating actors would pass by the Harbourfront promenade directly outside the Powerplant Gallery. Acting out subtle and apparently normal activities, the actors would blur themselves seamlessly into the scene.
Watching closely, the audience would attempt to determine who was acting and was not acting. Of course, at first everybody passing by is suspect to acting and everybody seems to be slightly unreal or "over acting".
Over time, the actors would begin to reveal themselves through exact and precise repetitive loops of their activities. In this case, each performance was 30 minutes, which allowed the actors to pass by about every 3 minutes!
Toward the end of the performance, most of the actors were easily recognized and their actions were humourosly predictable yet still appeared natural.
A Life/Theater Blog was created to faciliate the collaboration with the actors.
Special Thanks to the Curator Helena Reckitt, Powerplant staff Jon Davies, Jennifer Matotek and Molly Sigalet and most importantly the Life/Theater Actors.
